Get To Know Us
Adventists believe life is more than just the accumulation of "stuff". It’s about more than just surviving. It means more than simply maximising pleasure and minimising pain. We believe every life is of infinite value. Why? Because every human is miraculously crafted by God who wants us to live life to the full. What's more, He sent His Son to demonstrate true love, forgiveness and grace.
Weekly Small Group Bible reading
Small groups of us get together throughout the week for small-group Bible reading in each others homes. This is a good option of you’re not keen to be exposed to a larger number of people just yet and you’re wanting to dip your toe in. You can just come as you are, no need to bring anything, but if you have a Bible- it’s good to bring it so you can check things out for yourself. If you don’t have one, we can help you get access to one. The meetings usually go for about an hour.
Weekly Small Group Prayer
Small groups of us also meet specifically to pray to God together. The meetings usually go for under an hour. There may be a short reading of a Bible portion, but the majority of the time is spent praying in some way, shape or form.
We often take turns offering thanks to God for looking after us and the answers received to previous prayers. We also take time to tell Him how much we love Him and how good He is. We also ask for help with situations in our life and the lives of others. Jesus tells us we can come to talk to God in His name and that God is longing to hear from us.
If you would like us to pray for you, feel free to share your prayer requests. If you are comfortable to take a turn praying out loud with the group you are also welcome to. If you have no idea how to pray to God, we are happy to teach you from the Bible what the Bible says about prayer -it’s exciting!
Shared lunches
Every second and fourth Sabbath of the month we have a shared lunch after the main worship service. Visitors are invited to stay and have lunch with us. (On the other weeks there is soup and buns for those staying over for the afternoon Bible study.) Many of us are vegetarians, so we stick to vegetarian dishes for shared meals. If you are interested in learning about the health benefits of plant-based cooking or how to cook plant-based meals, check out our upcoming events.
Socials
We also have Saturday social nights where we spend time together playing games, or other activities and eating and socialising together. Check out our calendar for upcoming social events.
Community Health Programs
Seventh-day Adventists believe in holistic health of body, mind and character. Physical health impacts mental and emotional health. Many people are struggling in these areas and we are committed to sharing with Invercargill community what we’ve learned as a church over the past 150 years in the areas of holistic health and wellness. You can find our next health event on our calendar.
Rest home singing
Once a month on Saturday afternoon we visit a local rest home to sing hymns to the residents there and spend some time chatting with them afterward. Young and old are welcome to join in - the residents love seeing children. If you are not sure about singing, just spending some time with some of the folk and showing some care and attention can make their day.
Random Acts of Kindness
Once a month, on Sunday morning, a group of our volunteers go out into the community to assist someone in particular need with a practical job such as gardening, clearing, moving heavy things, housework or light house repairs. (Criteria and procedures for working with vulnerable people apply.) We work with local organizations to find out where there is a particular need. If you would like to know more about our Random Acts of Kindness projects, feel free to contact us for more information.
